The Sao Paulo
School.
In January 2025, the doors opened to a brand-new school in the São Paulo suburb of Parelheiros. The construction of this amazing new space for education, play, and community connections was the K2 Foundation’s first project.
How it started
The K2 Brazil team were alerted to the work being done by Associação Semeando Amor com a Tia Mônica - they were striving to offer an education to children within the Parelheiros community.
Associação Semeando Amor com Tia Mônica was created when Tia (Aunt) Mônica set up a small home classroom in a bid to offer her nephew, Jhonatan, access to a good education. Jhonatan was born with Cornelia de Lange syndrome, a rare genetic disorder: local mainstream schools felt ill equipped to give him the support he needed.
Jhonatan sadly passed away in 2023; around the same time, the decision was made to proceed with plans to construct a new building from scratch. Jhonatan’s memory lives on in the school, and in the smiles of the children it serves.
The school today
A modern, bright building, fully accessible and designed to offer the children who attend a safe and vibrant learning facility.
In addition to classrooms, the new school also boasts an indoor play space, an infirmary, a fully stocked and equipped pantry and kitchen, a large communal dining space, a lift to access all floors, and a roof terrace – this provides not only room for outdoor play, but also a home for the school’s roof garden, where herbs, vegetables and plants are grown.
The below film was produced using footage from the school’s opening week, and captures the joy felt by the children and volunteers at having a new space to proudly call their own.
Although construction is complete, our work with the school isn’t.
We are committed to supporting the school with operational costs on a long-term basis. Want to help us continue bringing joy to children in Brazil?
